Hummingbird turns your audio collection into a "sonic parts bin", allowing you to create remixes and rearrangements in real time (i.e. in front of an audience).First, you "quantise" your tracks by dropping markers to indicate where the beats are. While performing, you can mix up to 12 tracks simultaneously, without having to beatmatch - you just set a master tempo and hummingbird keeps everything in time. Tracks are automatically cut up into "loops" which can be repeated, played in order or reordered on the fly, using headphone preview if you have two soundcards; like being able to lift the needle off a record, then drop it down without missing a beat. Hummingbird's main strength is a tactile rather than point-and-click interface - you keep your left hand on the keyboard and your right hand on the mouse at all times - so it feels more like a musical instrument in use. It's also expressly designed for live performance rather than studio use, so it has features such as lockable controls and audio testing.
