 XVEnc for Windows 95/98

XVEnc is an ActiveX control designed to compress WAV files to MP3 format. It is intended to be used for compressing low-quality audio files, such as telephone recordings. The control features built-in highpass filter (fixed at ~150 Hz) and lowpass filter (user defined 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 kHz) for eliminating high frequency noise. The following encoding bitrates are supported [kbits/s]: 8, 16, 24, 32. The control works with both mono and stereo 16 bit WAV files.

Typical compression ratios (WAV file size to MP3 file size) are:

  • 20 x at 32 kbps
  • 30 x at 24 kbps
  • 40 x at 16 kbps
  • 80 x at 8 kbps
