Just trying to edit some home video's

I can't belive this. Please tell me there is an easier way. I have a video camera that makes .asf video files. but to make video software able to use .asf, I have to change them to mpg4, but to do that I have to download and install Microsofts Media Encoder 7.1 on Windows XP Pro, and to make that work I have to download and install DirectX Media Runtime 6.0 so that asfTools3.1 can change the formats of the .asfs t mpg4, then I can view and edit my videos on Premier, After Effects, Ulead VideoStudio 6.0 etc... What a day. Is there an easier way? I thought that Win XP Pro should handle stuff like this on its own. Any ideas?

i want to ask you if i can use windows media encoder to run the following crateria :
run windows media encoder on the server computer running windows media services and the clients connect with the server .
any client can talk with the server and the server distribute the sound to every one( one to many crateria)
how can i implement this crateria .?

hey, i am Mohammad Mushtaq Asif doing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering at West Virginia University. I dont have comments right now but i require a small favor from u. I hope that u will help me out.
I am willing to buy a computer. I wanted to do encoding on this system using Windows Media Encoder 7. so i would like to know the specifications for the system i am going to buy. The specs should show all details from the type of processor to the type of audio and video cards to be installed.
