On the other hand, if you are an MP3 veteran and you've been looking for a very clean sounding encoder, you can sit back and relax: N2MP3 is as high-end as MP3 gets. N2MP3 sports the Proteron MPEG encoder for MPEG1 layer III format. The algorithm is a variation of the psycho acoustic model and supports variable bitrate (VBR) with minimum bitrate specification and full support for joint stereo encoding. The quality of Proteron's encoder is of the highest caliber. Although based on the International Standard source for MP3, the Proteron encoder includes proprietary improvements making it substantially better than plain ISO psy-model based encoders. The quality of Proteron's encoder approaches that of the current leading standard FhG encoder, a German high-end MPEG encoding algorithm, but is significantly faster. On most G3 Macintosh computers, including all iMacs and iBooks, Proteron MPEG Encoder is capable of encoding 128kbps, better quality (psy-model) MP3s faster than real time. Lower quality modes are much faster of course, and higher bitrates approach that of full-quality 44khz CD audio. The MP3 audio format has become the standard for a reason - it's smaller and it sounds better than other audio file formats. MPEG Layer 3 files can fit up to a minute of CD-quality (44.1 KHz, 16-bit stereo) audio in a single megabyte. For comparison, an audio CD can contain a maximum of 74 minutes of music.
