Napster gets legitimate with the Dave Matthews Band
'I Did It', their new single, has been released on Napster and is thus the first legitimite major label act to officially distribute music on the P2P networking tool.

The Dave Matthews Band decided to go ahead into new territory after discovering low-quality versions of the single were being distributed on Napster. The band wanted fans to hear the song in more colorful light and released a high-quality version to the public.

In another move towards relations with the world of big business, Napster beta 9 features links to CDNow so that users can buy CDs. This development comes after an agreement with Bertelsmann to transform Napster into a fee-charging service that pays royalties to record companies and artists.

It's too early to tell whether this shift will be accepted by the bulk of Napster users.
