MP3 Surgeon: operating on your MP3s
The MP3 Surgeon interface is immediately impressive in its simplicity. The five main tools of this program can be accessed by labeled buttons along the top area of the interface. The main section of the interface is divided into two areas; the left for actual editing and processing and the right a constant display for MP3 information and ID3 Tag data.

Visual Editor - This is the main editing tool, use this for Trimming or Splitting MP3s
As you would expect in a WAV editor there is a visual oscilloscope type display of the MP3 file. Range markers are added or deleted to create sections within the entire file where each section can be exported as and MP3 file. The Split Wizard can be utilized to add range markers (or split points) at specific intervals by either total number of sections, section time length or section file size, thus creating sections of equal size. Range markers can also be added manually at any point within the file. Once a range marker has been set in the visual editor you can listen to the three seconds of audio before or after the marker position to help you determine the correct split point in a file. Range marker positions can also be set by entering a time point in hours, minutes, seconds and frames. A drop-down menu lets you select a specific marker.

MP3 Joiner - Use the Join tool to recombine split MP3s
This feature makes it possible to use MP3 Surgeon as a method of transferring/transporting MP3 files on low capacity media like floppy disks where a file can be split and spanned across several floppies to be joined again at the destination computer with MP3 Surgeon. Add MP3s to be joined into the File List, then in the Join Information table underneath you can view the total number of files to join, and the total length and size of the proposed join. Files can also be deleted or their order changed.

MP3 -> WAV - Convert your MP3s back to WAV files for CD burning
Simply add MP3 files to the File List, choose whether to save in the source directory or a separate directory and select File - Convert to WAV. Easy!

MP3 Catalog - Catalog your MP3 collection into a CSV file for use with MS Excel or Access
Select the drive, directory or folder containing the MP3 files you would like to catalog and use the drop-down menu to filter by filename extension. Advanced settings allow you to choose whether or not to include ID3 Tag data and if you want to catalog files within sub-folders of your designated directory. Your catalog will be saved as a CSV (comma delimited text) file which can be opened in Excel, Access and other spreadsheet software. Cataloged data includes file name, file path, file size, MPEG Layer, bitrate, sample rate, frames, play length, copyright and ID3 information.

Batch Mode - Get MP3 Surgeon to do the Hard work to all your MP3s in one go
This feature allows you to overwrite ID3 Tag data, normalize and apply fade-in and fade-out effects to all MP3 files within the selected folder or directory. WARNING - Any operations in Batch Mode overwrite the existing MP3(s). If you wish to keep the original files, back them up to a separate directory.

MP3 Surgeon's Help covers the features and operation of each of the five tools and includes tutorials, contact and license information, and a search feature.

MP3 Surgeon can replace your current MP3 editing program, your MP3 decoder, and your file cataloging software without cutting back on the necessary features of each. This program is well worth the 1.0 MB download and $19.95 price tag.
