Hi all ... I've got a library of 600 or so CD's that I am going to convert to digital and toss the CD player / cartridges. I've already converted a lot to MP3 format, for my MP3 player. I know that there are other formats, but for now, I'll stay with MP3. To that end, I need to find a software package that will allow me to manage my music and play it along the following lines: a single CD (say Dark Side of the Moon) all CD's by a performer (pink Floyd) all CD in a category (classic rock) random selection (a mix of everything) I can use winamp to grab internet radio, if needed. can rip CD's to the HD with the existing software, if needed. In short, a fairly robust package with some flexibility. It's going to need a the capability to import MP3's and build a catalog. needs a good user interface. search tools for finding songs to play. the computer has internet access. ability to perform backups, as hard drives will ALL crash sometime in the future (I run unix & win systems for a living). O/S platform ... I'd prefer to get something that will run on win2k (yes it's ancient, and the laptop is even older !), but if needed, could go to XP. setting up a linux system would not be out of the question, either, just I might need a new laptop (not a major issue). if it's freeware, great. shareware at a reasonable cost is not a problem. Idea's anybody ?? I realize that this might be opening a can of worms, and to that end, if I can get 2 or 3 good choices, thats fine and I'll see which one works best for me. please, I do not want to start a war over what's best. contact me at t3truck@yahoo.com if you want to privately express your ideas, etc. thanks, steve
