Clipping has more to do with the volume of the music than it does with how you encode it.

As far as encoding settings go, I recommend you use the latest version of LAME (3.97 right now) and use the quality setting #2 (this is -V2 if you’re using the commandline version).

Now back to the clipping. One of the problems with CDs these days is they’re recorded too “hot”… they’re compressed to the point where most of the peaks hit 0dB. MP3 encoding changes the audio data and, so some peaks now surpass 0db.

But these peaks aren’t lost forever. Lowering the volume of the MP3 with a program called MP3Gain will restore the peaks. MP3Gain’s operations are lossless, by the way. They won’t hurt the sound quality of the MP3s.
