 windows media player wont detect my portable device

im trying to download songs from windows media player to my mp3. its a samsung and ive already checked and its compatable with wmp. how do i make wmp recognize my device so that i can transfer my music. theres 3 different usb(?) outlets on my computer, 2 in the front and 1 in the back. ive tried plugging in my mp3 into all three outlets and it doesnt change anything. i know my computer in general recognizes the device because i charge it through my computer. i just cant get wmp to recognize it. what do i do? please help!
