vl-545 mp4 player distress

ok. i bought a visaul land mp4 player recently (VL-545 1GB) and i hav problems. i loaded the software....ok kool. i plugged her in to my computer and....it keeps going back and forth between usb mode and just being off...why? i cant run the driver to install it because it cant detect it. whats happening and why? anyone else having the same problem? or is it hardware? should i get my money back?
