To put it simply, Winmx and perhaps P2P in its present form is dying. There are two reasons. The first is that the Winmx network cannot support the number of online users. I see other users enter my queue and though I am on a direct connection, other users are timed out or disconnected before uploading more than a few bytes.

The second reason is that the weak network not only of Winmx but of other P2P software has created a situation in which there are always dozens in 'my' upload queue. And 'I' am NEVER in a download queue or I am timed out before I reach 50th place. As a result people have become selfish and self protective.

It's gotten so bad that someone has devised a program for Winmx called Leechammer. Users can set Leechammer to 'boot' other users who are not sharing a set number of files. That gives the kiss of death to anyone new to P2P file sharing. It is a symptom of the spiteful attitude that is emerging in the P2P community. What about those other users who appear to be sharing files but ALWAYS have more than 1,000 in their queues? Winmx finds their files... but always returns a 'busy' signal. How do these users manage to set a queue length to higher than one thousand? I don't know. But I don't believe for a second that these people are sharing any files.

Last year, I received a warning from my cable company about bandwidth usage. Uploads were putting me at risk of being assessed extra charges. And I was downloading almost nothing. I had to protect myself, so restructed my uploads.

So -- I think the biggest threat to P2P is not the RIAA but weak networks engendering selfish attitudes among people who otherwise would have files to share.
