mp3 burning, need help

I've been converting (ripping) music to mp3 format in the windows media player 10, and thats been going great, but when I burn the mp3s onto cd I'm not getting anymore onto the cd than I had before I changed the format! I thought you could get a lot more music on a cd with the mp3 format?
