(Originally posted 19:02:53 09/10/04) I see this post was from several days ago, but I hope I'm not too late. I have to say that, in my opinion, there is a big difference. If you're listening on your computer speakers you may not detect a difference; for a long time I couldn't. I would listen on my computer speakers, and would play CDs on my stereo at work (high volume, but with a lot of surrounding noise) and it sounded fine. But when I played one in my car where I could really hear it, a CD that was from mp3s at a 128 bitrate sounded really bad. Then I got a pair of good headphones, which I use at the computer, and listening with them I can hear a definite difference. The 128 is very tinny; alot of times you can hear it on drum beats, which come across sounding very metallic...and I don't mean that in a good way. 160 is, of course, a little better, but you can still hear the same tinniness. 192 is about the lowest that I will go, unless I have absolutely no other choice. 192 is usually pretty decent. I can hear some degradation of sound, but not nearly that of 128. I have been encoding mine in 224k. I am in the process of ripping and encoding my CD collection so that I can make mp3 discs for playing in the car. I've had an mp3-playing Kenwood in the car for, like, a year and a half, and it's much nicer to carry around mp3 discs. I can fit -- depending on the length of the original disc -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 to 9 discs onto one mp3 disc. This allows me to carry more music in less space, and also allows me to keep my expensive CD collection safely in their jewel cases at home. So, back to the point: I'm ripping to 224k, because it seems to me the best balance between sound quality and storage capacity, with quality being the most important point. At 224, I don't detect any sound degradation from the original. But it's all subjective, of course; someone else may hear something I'm not. But I like 224k. But try this: Rip & encode, or download the same song at different bitrates, and compare. I think yo : (Originally posted 04:02:03 08/24/04 from 62.64.201.9) : Hi, : Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in sound quality in MP3's between 128k & 192k... : I can not tell the diff and prefer 128 as this takes up less space... : And if you were to burn the MP3's to disc to play on your hi-fi, would there be any sound quality diff on the end result.. : Pls help as there is cash involved in this argument... : Cheers : JAY
