Well... there are different methods which the soundcard in a computer can use to play sounds through. Sometimes when you (or these days, Windows itself) install the wrong drivers for a soundcard, one method will work and another will not.

I suggest you pinpoint the brand and model of your soundcard (or integrated sound, if you have a relatively new computer) and visit the manufacturers' website to get and install the latest drivers.
