Albums or Playlists on RCA Lyra 1071?
Posted by Mike on April 24, 2004 at 17:16:57:
I just bought an RCA Lyra 1071. I already have a Creative Labs Muvo2 $GB, and at some point I'd like to buy a large hard drive player like the Iriver iHP-120, but I thought it would be nice to have a very small light flash player as well, and the Lyra 1071 looked good to me.
I already downloaded and flashed the new firmware.
Some things I like about this unit--besides being small and light, cheap ($87 something at Wal-Mart), a much better LCD (two lines, larger type) than the Muvo, the fact of the SD card slot is very nice, not common on many units these days. I even tried a 512 MB SD card I had in it, and it worked. As such cards can be bought for $90 these days (www.pricewatch.com), you could have a 640 MB flash player for less than $200, with infinite expandability through more cards!
But----one major problem for me so far. I hope to solve it--if not, it goes back to Wal-Mart. Certainly the documentation for this product is terrible--the book that comes with it, as well as on the web site. I searched hard for a solution so far, with no results.
I transferred songs to it using Windows (XP) Explorer. I already had albums (ripped CDs of mine) in folders on my hard drive, and I just copied the folders to the Lyra.
For my other mp3 player, the Muvo, that's all I need to do. Although one can use playlists on the Muvo, it can also read folders on its drive as albums, and I just open the folder, and it plays the songs in order as an album.
With the Lyra, however, it reads all the songs inside folders, but doesn't recognize the folders as groupings of songs at all. All the songs on the Lyra and memory card are grouped together as one large group of songs, with sequential numbers that can go into the hundreds, but no groupings at all. When you press play, it will start playing one of the songs. You can press FF to go to the next song, or RW to go to the previous song, but I see no way to select an album, to search a particular song or artist, etc.,etc. You just have to scroll through all the songs., to find what you want.
There is what looks like a very primitive way to create a "Program", scrolling through all the songs on the unit one by one and choosing one by one which to add to the program. But it doesn't even look like there is a way to have multiple such "programs" residing on the unit., just the last one programmed.
Although I saw no other reason to install the MusicMatch software that comes with it, as I have plenty of ripping and other audio software, and the file transfer using Windows Explorer looks good, I decided to try MM to see if one could use that somehow to create playlists that would work on the Lyra. I downloaded the newest version of Musicmatch, and the plug in for this unit . If I created a playlist with MM on my hard drive (.M3U format), then dragged the playlist to "portable device", it copied all the tracks in the playlist to the Lyra (much slower than Windows Explorer, BTW), but did not copy the playlist itself at all. I manually copied the .M3u file from the hard drive to the Lyra using WIndows Explorer, but alas, I couldn't find any way for the Lyra to recognize such a playlist for playback.
As I said, I couldn't find any solutions to this in the documentation or on the RCA website. It's hard to believe they would make a music player with absolutely no way to organize the songs into albums and/or playlists.
Did I miss something? (I hope so.) Is there a way to do this?
