There are MP3's out there that are encoded in "VBR" (variable bitrate). In these MP3's, the bitrate is constantly changing to suit the complexity of the passage. Most players these days should properly handle these MP3's, but there are always some that don't. The best MP3 out there is Winamp 2.XX. It's not unheard of that your MP3's could actually be the corrupt kind seeded by the music industry. These are actually nowhere near as common as you would think. It's only being done to some pop music, and other genres are being left pretty much untouched.
