What player do you listen to these MP3's on, and what did you use to convert them to burn to audio-CD?

Is the distortion really heavy, making the music nearly inaudible, or is it pretty light, just annoying?

If the distortion is pretty light, I'm betting that it's just because the MP3's were badly encoded, and there's nothing that can be done about that.
