It isn't... necessarily.

Vinyl is the ultimate recording format - the quality is very good and doesn't really degrade over time (just over use), and especially because it's in analog.

But, MP3 is a nice user-end format to store music in, because it can come close to but not match the sound of the source CD it was made from, and do so at around 1/8 the filesize, meaning you can record 8x as much MP3 at a decent quality to a CD as compared to CD-audio format.
