Bluesy, hypnotic, melodic hooks and thoughtful lyrics. Most former denizens of Tulsa's glorious early-to-mid `80s club scene will recall Square Force, one of the most sought after new wave pop bands from that period. Their infectious brand of fast and furious synth-rock packed many a Saturday night dance floor back in the skinny tie years and earned the quartet the distinction of ,"Tulsa's Best Band" in a poll conducted by KOTV Channel 6 in 1986. They released their debut LP, Media Blitz, that same year (amid showers of local praise), and an ever-expanding touring area. Now they're back. With the return of original drummer Mick Lewis, the band has begun making appearances in Tulsa and recording in their new home, Flying Sub Studios. Brothers Michael and Dart Steed (keyboardist and bassist, respectively) hooked up with (guitarist) Randy Brumley and (drummer) Mick Lewis in 1981 and realized there was an immediate musical bond between the four of them. Chemistry is all-important, says Dart. In a different musical context we'd probably all be misfits, but you put us all together and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One of those parts has parted. Michael Steed has left the band to pursue other endeavors. We wish him the best. Dart Steed - vocals, bass At the tender age of 9 years old Dart was sharing the stage with music legend Paul Buskirk, (see also All Music Guide) at Shakey's Pizza in Houston, Texas. A banjo prodigy, Dart performed jazz and standards, honing his skill on stringed instruments early on. Dart has become a great singer/songwriter with production skills to match. McCartney would be proud to hear Dart play the Hofner Violin Bass. Some of Dart's favorite's are The Beatles, David Bowie, Neil Finn, Badfinger, Split Enz, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Sheryl Crow, Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Sly & The Family Stone and Harry Nilsson. Randy Brumley - vocals, guitar, lap steel Singer/Songwriter, began playing music and occasionally performing with his family practically as soon as he could form the G chord. With his parents, uncle and family friends in the local country music scene and a brother playing in rock bands it was natural for Randy, who sang with his sister Angela to follow suit. Later, watching his brother, Gary Brumley become enraptured in songwriting would influence him to take up the familial passion. Randy has performed in acts throughout the Tulsa region including Cains Ballroom, The Tulsa Club, Nine of Cups and Mayfest. Most recently Randy was pleased to be part of the Inaugural Tulsa Repertory Theatre Production of Romeo and Juliet as a guitarist in the ensemble. His fav's are - The Beatles, David Bowie, Richard Thompson, The Church, Pretenders, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, U2, Split Enz, Neil Finn, Tom Petty, The Smiths, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, kd lang, Peter Case, Todd Rundgren, Adrian Belew, Midnight Oil, Roxy Music, XTC, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Police and NRBQ among others. Randy likes to tickle his jazz ears with Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck. Mick Lewis - drums, percussion Out of this gentle man flows powerful rhythms! Mick gets in the groove and he is like a steam train. Sort of like a Buddy Rich/Charlie Watts/Ringo Fusion! Mick likes The Kinks, Beatles, The Stones, Badfinger, U2, The Police, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Ian Drury and The Blockheads, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Elvis Presley(sun sessions). Mick is also into traditional jazz including Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus. |
